It started on a surf trip to San Diego.
Standing on the beach, I picked up a bottle of sunscreen and began reading the label. Most of the ingredient names were unfamiliar to me, and I realized I had never really stopped to ask what was in the products our family used every summer.
That moment sent me down a rabbit hole of research—not because unfamiliar automatically means unsafe, but because I wanted to understand our options better.
As a dad of five daughters, I kept coming back to one simple question:
Could we create simpler summer skincare with ingredients we knew, understood and felt good about choosing for our family?
We wanted something better.
Not complicated. Not chemical-heavy. Not something we had to second guess every time we used it. Just something made with ingredients we could trust.
So we made it ourselves.
My wife had already been crafting natural skincare at home for years—moisturizers, balms, and oils made from simple, nourishing ingredients. She sourced raw cocoa on a vacation we took and began experimenting with oils from different parts of the world. We spent time learning methods people have used to protect their skin for centuries.
Our goal was to ceate a product we felt good using on our girls—because we didn't want to put commercial formulas on their skin.
So we started experimenting together. And we didn't stop until it was right.
We spent a year testing, adjusting, and refining.
Different ingredients. Different ratios. Different methods.
We tested it everywhere: In the intense Okanagan summer heat. In our backyard pool. On our most fair-skinned daughter during a trip to Africa. Through the blazing sun of Turkey, Mexico, India, Saint Martin, Florida and beyond.
We needed something that would: Apply smoothly. Hold up in the heat. Work across skin tones. And stand up to real life outside.
That's how OK Sunshine was born.
OK—as in the Okanagan, the Canadian beach resort capital where we live and where every product is crafted.
Sunshine—because that's the life we love. Long days at the lake. Hot summers. Kids outside until the sun goes down.
